YO WHITIES, STOP AND SHUT UP. YES I MEAN ALL OF YOU. EVEN YOU GUYS THAT THINK YOU ARE “REALLY” ONTO IT. THIS IS A RESPONSE TO THE REALLY FUCKEN SHIT RESPONSES I’VE HAD TO HEAR, PUT UP WITH, LOSE FRIENDSHIPS OVER, ETC ETC, WHEN YOU GUYS ARE ACTUALLY CHALLENGED ON YOUR RACISM.

Firstly I’m going to start by saying I am not going to use the phrase “calling people out on their shit”, please please, keep this language exclusive to sexual assault stuff. It’s really fucking important and if you don’t understand why then talk to me about it. I’m going to say when challenging people on their shit, or racist behaviour or their racism. Ok so, in the past few years whenever this has happened in Melbourne, in my group of friends, community, extended community, there has been this really big problem. Now I’m a person of colour and am already pissed off that I have to write this but it seems as though there is this really big lack of education of white people in this community surrounding race stuff. So the problem is right, well, if any of you people had actually read about this shit, which you all seem to tell me you do, is some pretty basic, well known and well written about responses when people are challenged on their racism. “The so called, what not to do’s”. This is what I’m going to talk about here. People’s fucken wack, bullshit, whatever responses. Responses that make me cringe, laugh, cry, get real angry and in the end, just want to fast pace EXIT outta this scene.

1. Firstly I’m gonna start talking about the ye olde “self defensiveness”, “denial” and the “BUT”.

So on a theory level it’s very interesting to note that denial and defensiveness is quite often connected to fear of loss. Those of you who are friends with people of colour are probably shit scared of losing those friendships in acknowledging the differences between us and or your own racism. One really great and potent form of denial and defensiveness is intellectualising. When you say all the right things and use an intellectual understanding of racism to distance yourself from how you perpetuate and benefit from racism. Please don’t insult me by telling me you are reading bell hooks, Malcolm x, audre lorde etc. Do you know that most of these black authors who you say you have read, wrote specifically for a black audience. They were not writing to educate white people. They were writing to educate and inspire and empower their own people. I’m not telling you not to read them, fuck, education is really important, but remember, these books are not yours to be inspired by, they are not yours to appropriate, to quote, to tell people of colour that you are somehow trying to be anti racist by reading this shit, seriously, it’s insulting. It also seeks to separate you from other white people. Don’t do it. You perpetrate and benefit from systematic racism, you benefit from white privilege. YOU ARE NO DIFFERENT.

Also time and time again I’ve heard some really cool stuff from white people about their racism and then, and then, comes the BUT, but you did this, but the way you challenged me was fucked, but, but, but. For fucks sake. Forget about the BUT. Just swallow your fucken pride already, in doing the “but this”, you completely devalidate what you have just said. You take away from the issue, you avoid actually taking responsibility, you become the victim, you subtract from the issue. Why bother taking responsibility only to take it away again? Just concentrate on the actual issue you are been challenged on. Don’t make it into your injustices. You do not need to highlight someone’s shit way of dealing with stuff, someone’s shit communications skills, do it another time, don’t do it at all. You are been challenged on your racism. THAT IS THE IMPORTANT ISSUE HERE. JUST DEAL WITH THAT.

2. Oh yeah and the nice and short “are you turning pc on me”, when some white person actually called my friend who is a person of colour a nigger. Actually I’m just going to talk about the nigger thing. I’m still in actual awe that this person thinks that they are so down and in touch with black people that they can get away with that shit. What the fuck. The only thing I have to say to this is if you are white and think you have a right to call a person of colour a nigger, well get over it. Sorry, but you don’t get that privilege. I don’t care how un pc you are. You are an idiot for not recognising the history and intense power black people have in reclaiming that word. That word is not yours to use. Get it?

3. You are over reacting, too angry, too upset etc.

Ok, so do you know HOW MANY people of colour are thrust into the “too angry” box. Yawn. Don’t tell me that I need to learn how to manage my anger. fuck off. If you fail to recognise why HEAPS of people of colour are real angry then you need to realise your living in Australia or some shit. Serious man, I know that most of your friends are white, but wake up. We live in a COLONISED country. We live in a country with intensely racist immigration laws. WE LIVE IN A RACIST COUNTRY. HELLO???

Now, if you tell me I’m over reacting. I’m gonna tell you, you’re living off indigenous blood, off the genocide of indigenous people. You’re living off the blood of people of colour that work there fucken arses off in this country so that they can send their fucken kids to uni, whilst, been spat at on the street by white people and told to “go home”. My “over reaction” to your racism is from a life time of been told I am less then you, I belong less then you, I deserve less then you. So once again, fuck off.

4. Also there is the one where, especially white women do this, is equate race issues to feminist issues or some people equate it to class issues. Ok, so firstly, I am a women and a women of colour, all those issues that you speak of and say, “yeah I understand”, well, I understand them too. But not only do I understand those, I have to understand how race/class/gender all shape how I am treated, my place in society and my place in history. I know that it is really hard as a woman to feel like you could be the oppressor, because you are oppressed, but man, you have to remember that women of colour are oppressed by you, that women of colour are dealt some really shit blows cos of their skin, and add class stuff to that, well it’s not good news down the bottom. The issues are very different, and you will never understand them. Please don’t attempt to create links so that you can appear like you do.

So I’m sure there are shit loads of these types of responses that people have had to face, I guess these are just the ones I have come across. I can’t actually be bothered writing more, hey I have an idea, why don’t you guys get together and write about your own shit responses. HA.

An exhibition of cultures of protest and queer radicality presented as a visual art program of Museum of Brisbane's 'Prejudice & Pride'.

Familiar to warehouses, squats and other informal spaces, ‘Islands in the Stream’ is the first institutional exhibition of work by six young radically queer and transgender artist/activists all with shared histories in Brisbane.

Featuring works such as ‘Boys are Cheats and Liars’ (video) and ‘I’m a F**n Clone (After Ryan Trecartin)’ (textile), the exhibition registers a note of the personal and the regional from within a transglobally networked, radically post-identity politics movement.

Accompanying ‘Islands in the Stream’ is a double-channel video piece by Croatian artist Igor Grubic that takes footage of violent citizen reactions to the first gay-rights marches in Belgrade (2001) and Zagreb (2002) as a choreographic text.

Exhibition suitable for audiences aged 18 and over.

This project has been supported through a Creative Sparks Grant, a joint initiative of Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

MIA Born Free Video ....amazing hot cool important real

MIA (மாதங்கி 'மாயா' அருள்பிரகாசம்)'s new video for the BORN FREE song was taken down by youtube because of their "content policy".

Directed by Romain Gavras, it features nudity, graphic violence and a plot where ginger haired people are rounded up by pissed off soldiers into an armour-protected prison bus, driven to the desert and either shot or made to run through a minefield.............

The soldiers have American flag patches, and one ginger haired person is wearing a keffiyeh (outside of the Middle East and North Africa the keffiyeh first gained popularity among activists supporting the Palestinians in the conflict with Israel)......yet in the video plot there is no particular struggle explicitly addressed.
But by addressing no specific struggle, she addresses all struggles.

It is really common for white/western/rich/privelledged people to have ADJUSTED, NORMALISED and feel DISTANCED and UNAFFECTED by violence, genocide, torture, discrimination and war in non white/non western/non rich communities........we are living in a world where white people assume that violence and oppression inevitably happen to the "other." .. .. . . .

But by showing white red-haired people brutalized for no discernible reason other then being white with red hair, the video has induced "shock and horror".... mostly with people who identify with the white ginger physically or geographically.

SOOOOO by demonstrating white people suffering brutal violence, white viewers cannot automatically "otherize" them and are forced to consider the reality of violence and oppression.

And awareness is the very first step to action. so of course, this video was taken down from youtube. im sure there were ALOT of complaints from disturbed, pissed off white people who cant handle images of systematic oppression.

MIA is a really great artist who puts alot of time and thought into everything she makes, and i think she is really fucking successful at using her fame to affect people and make social/political commentary and change through art....which i think is actually really, really hard to do. So much art fails when it tries to do anything real or say anything beyond ego shit.
here is a quote from MIA:

Hey!! Does everyone know about how intensely good looking modern day hobo and steampunk fashion is?? They are two really different sub cultures with really similar styles of clothing worn extensively through-out North America.

Steampunk fashion seems like a bunch of wankers trying to look old-school merged with modern day technology. I'm not really interested in this scene at all, other than the fact that their fashion looks REALLY GOOD.

Who wouldn't want to be able to dress like this every day??

The most exciting thing about the steampunk fashion is the the science fiction/fantasy element to all the clothing and gear. If Mad Max was set in the U.S. this is what all the houses would look like....

And this is what all the "boys" and "girls" would look like.....

And we'd all get to play guitars that look like this....

And shoot dickheads with guns like this!

(Not that i advocate gun usage, seeing as guns were invented by white war mongering supremacists in the first place. But... These guns look pretty amazing and i'd use one of these if i really had to.....)

Modern day Hobo's on the other hand, are good looking, AND lead interesting and adventurous lives!! They spend most of the summer hitch hiking and hopping freight trains, and the long winter months working hard, studying, or staying on the road/rail, searching for meaning and living daily missions of discovery and defiance.

When i was traveling in the U.S. i went train hopping with a bunch of hobo friends and met some incredible artists, musicians and story-tellers along the way. Not one person looked boring or bland either, can you believe it!!?!

One of the absolute babes i met was a persyn called Dinah DiNova, who is a modern day hobo, writer, photographer, artist and musician. They grew up in Hollywood and their mother was the breeder and trainer of the Beethoven dogs (from the movie!!) >> how cool is that!!?
Here is a picture she took of herself being held aloft by a group of friends....

Something so incredible and interesting is their style of photography. They use an old-school method to create tintype photo's on the spot! Tintypes are made by creating a direct positive on a sheet of iron metal that is blackened by painting, laquering or enamelling. This is so rare and beautiful! Here are some photo's they made last year with some friends........

SKILL SHARES.
and UNDERSTANDING TRUE WEALTH AND POWER....

When we think of wealth, we too often think of money. This is a mistake. Wealth is actually a complex system of power that controls almost everything. (I am not talking about class struggle)
To understand wealth properly, and the way it oppresses it us, we must see it and define it in ways other then simply money.
I see WEALTH as not only access to currency, but as access to resources, access to skills, knowledge and education, access to safety and access to support.

When i see the world this way, i have a strong understanding of just how rich i truly am in terms of access to institutional education and support,
but i can also see the barriers in place to keep me feeling truly unpowerful and UNwealthy, in terms of access to skills/knowledge, access to safety and access to resources.

I see these barriers directly linked to the fact that I am a cisgendered womyn.
Patriarchy and those who benefit from it, OWN the skills/knowledge, access to safety, and access to resources and ARE NOT SHARING OR REDISTRIBUTING THIS WEALTH.

I can link this same concept to other systematic oppression. As a white identified person who is trying(and by no means succeeding) to take responsibility for my privileged, I have a basic (and by no means whole and sufficient) understanding of my privileged access to ALL WEALTH and how fucked it is that I can so easily and safely access so much whilst my people of colour friends and allies cannot. White power and those who benefit from it, OWN the skills/knowledge, access to safety, and access to resources and ARE NOT SHARING OR REDISTRIBUTING THIS WEALTH.

I can link this same concept to other systematic oppression. As a cisgendered womyn who identifies as a "womyn"(whatever that means) and as queer, I have a basic (and by no means whole and sufficient) understanding of my privileged access to ALL WEALTH and how fucked it is that I can so easily and safely access so much whilst my transgender, genderqueer, and genderfluid friends and allies cannot. Gender Binary, Gender-normativity, and Hetero-normativity and those who benefit from it, OWN the skills/knowledge, access to safety, and access to resources and ARE NOT SHARING OR REDISTRIBUTING THIS WEALTH.

WE MUST REDISTRIBUTE THIS WEALTH,........ this it not optional.
We are degraded, silenced, patronised, abused, assualted, murdered, ignored, invisible/voiceless, explioted, tokenised, and heaps more fucked things!!!!
we are not gonna do NOTHING about it!!!
We need skills. We need to learn all the things that we dont know, and grab hold of all that shit we dont have access to, that is keeping us so disempowered.
We need all the skills we can get.
OUR LIVES AND OUR FUTURES DEPEND ON THIS.

In light of these ideas. The primary objective of this skillshare is to enable people of colour, wimmin, trans folks and queerz to gain access to skills and knowledge which society has stereotypically been soley designated to straight white cisgendered men.
Straight, white, cisgendered men are welcome to participate, as long as they agree to the primary objective of the skillshare and actively working to not distrupt or counter attack, slow down, or hinder the primary objective.

This skillshare is in the seed stage of its existence. I want it to be a healthy tree.

I envisage this skill share to be an on going process that happens not only during designated community days but also more and more in our day-to-day lives. I dream of this happening again, and again, quite regularly. I see us self educating each other to dismantle the powers that keep us so fucked up, and redistributing what wealth we all DO have access to.
Really its now, or never.

SKILLS WE ALL NEED TO GET ACCESS TO, that are CURRENTLY HELD/CONTROLLED/MOST EASILY ACCESSED by "straight white men".
in no particular order.....

building, understanding basic engineering
fighting/defence, defence against weapons
fixing bikes
plumbing
fixing cars
understanding and using tools
gardening, including how to make functioning compost/worm farms/compost toilets
true histories and struggles of the oppressed
Live sound/how PAs and mixing desks work
speaking/understanding languages other then english
radical/liberated sexualities+sex +sex work
using computers and complicated computer programs
fixing computers
hacking
community decision making
money/budgeting
electricity+ energy
defining and creating art/music in safe environments
speaking with confidence
learning/using the body for strength based activites
reading/understanding theory and heavy intellectual text

plus about a miillion more things, this is just what i could come up with when i sat down for 3 minutes to write out a list.

Various Artists – Hit Machine XIVVII (Gooey On The Inside)

Gooey On The Inside

Since their formation back in May 2007, Melbourne-based duo Gooey On The Inside (aka Holly Fluxx and Kati Cubby) have been responsible for organising parties and art exhibitions (including an installation space at this year’s Electrofringe festival), whilst also somehow finding time to fit in graphic design work, a quarterly magazine and a blog that continues to generate a substantial fanbase. This debut 14 track unmixed CD compilation ‘Hit Machine XIVVII’ (packed in a lavish Dual Plover sleeve complete with sew on patch and fold-out poster) sees Gooey On The Inside expanding into a record label and collects together contributions from likeminded collaborations ranging from around Australia, to Japan and Chile. As the retina-dazzling fluoro sleeve art here suggests, this compilation sees Fluxx and Cubby concentrating on more retro-styled hiphop, synth-pop and rave styles, with the tracklisting here pretty much jumping all over the place, in enjoyable ADD-raddled style.

If OTT’s opening ‘Gold Star’ suggests a Modular meets Ministry Of Sound-esque trip ahead with its fusion of coolly detached Electroclash vocals and clicking tech-house rhythms, it’s nicely countered by Julia Rose’s side-step into vintage-sounding Latino electro-hiphop on the block party-worthy ‘Trato’, and the burbling, playful ‘Up Against The World’ synth pop meets Slits-esque punky vocals of Kt Spit’s ‘Up Against The World.’ Elsewhere, Pandie unleashes some hardcore house-meets 8bit gamecore sounds complete with pounding kickdrums with ‘Ur Magic’ , before Toxic Lipstick take things out into distorted noisy sampling and shouted pop vocals with ‘Horse 4eva’ (taken from last year’s ‘Poopin’ mini-album) and Pig & Machine’s savage breakcore-fuelled noise workout on ‘Dry And Crusty On The Outside (But Gooey On The Inside).’ If you’re a fan of the aforementioned Toxic Lipstick, then you pretty much already know what sorts of hyperactive antics to expect here, and in this case ‘Hit Machine XIVVII’ offers up an occasionally knowingly cheesy dose of noise that goes down a treat. Pack your red cordial.

got an all night bus to santiago and spent the whole day getting all the work formatted for printing, and then running around the whole city getting the printing...(not as simple and straight forward as i assumed? ) haha.

sooo tired!!!
then went to gallery and set up till midnight.
we arrived and they had just painted the walls purple!! .. and said we couldnt use the upstairs gallery space, which is white, and had to use the downstairs space.
and that we werent allowed to hang anything, only use tape!!!!

it was challenging to work within those parameteres like...on the spot, but we did it!!!!!

MISS BOLIVIA is a girl mc based in argentina, she makes reggae, reggaeton, dancehall, rap,...... i went to her show in Buenos Aires, it was really good!!!!!
she has these MASSIVE dreads, like twice the size of her head !!
THe show was really fun and engaging, the band was : Miss bolivia (mc), a hype girl, and a live bassist (no dj).
fuulllly reggae style rapping in spanish, it was awesome!!!

she was confident and really relaxed, i havent been to many girl reggae/dancehall shows, in fact i think it was the first one i have seen. Miss Bolivia is queer and the audience was made up of like hipsters, drag queens, rasta guys, queer girls wearing metal shirts.....
soooo wierd and interesting mix of ppl!!!

Even tho i really love it, i think alot of dancehall and reggae can be quite homophobic and sexist, and so i thought it was so awesome and interesting and cool to go to this MASSIVE club and see this total mix of ppl and everyone just dancing and not caring about that shit.

V is so underground that you can't even google her. Cos her name is just one letter !!! 23 year old Berlin photographer, party starter and derelict chic, V is fluoro-grungey and totally cool.
Originally from Brisbane, Australia, V only meant to come to Berlin for one week. But she found herself entirely at home in the hot and bombed out streets of Berlin, where it's super easy to be poor and fabulous. Why would she ever leave?
V picks up bottles for the deposit money, and sells stuff she finds on the streets at Mauer Park markets (right next to the old Berlin Wall). Wearing a leather jacket with a slime green 'V' tagged on the back, and toting a Vivienne Westwood tartan bag, V photographs a rotating cast of sparkle-crust Berliners (no, not the donuts, the babes!!), on location and at her own studio, Studio V. And in the loft bar of one of Berlin's longest running squatted artist spaces Tacheles, V throws Thursday night parties with weird acts, heaps of graffiti on the walls and super cheap cocktails.
V also photographs bands, does vintage fashion shoots and holds open-call portrait sessions, via the website Craigslist. 'I've photographed heaps of girls, but only 3 guys have ever answered the ad. One of them ended up being my muse, Hans, and the other two guys were freaks. One was a fitness buff, he wanted me to take photos with his bike and then invited me back to the fitness centre under his house, and the other guy brought in a big hunk of salami to be photographed with. That guy also showed this naked video of himself on youtube.'
V makes dark synth-wave too, and because of her dirty blonde hair and super catchy grunge hooks, we're tentatively calling V this generation's Kurt Cobain. Listen to her music here:

heres what happend.
i went to this hiphop night thing 'Awwww Shit', at this bar in fitzroy. from the write up it seemed like a really cool thing, just like some djs, and heaps of couches and pizzas for only 7 bucks. one of the djs was gonna be raceless (from curse ov dialect) so i went and dragged along my friends.
once we got there, i realised it wasnt really the the right thing for my mates...after about an hour 4 friends left. leaving me with only 3 friends.

anyway, after raceless dj'd a solid set of nearly all public enemy songs, i didnt know who was gonna dj or how long i wanted i stay.

THEN

suddenly i saw this really bright blue skirt over on the dancefloor. and me and my friends where like WHO is THAT. everyone in melbourne is so afraid of colour in there clothes.....and we looked over, and there was suddenly all these cool girls on the dancefloor who were all REALLY GOOD DANCERS!!! and we were like....omg.....

now for ppl reading this who are like pffft who cares about this story, who cares about some girls wearing colourful clothes doing really good dancing at a hiphop night......well...im sorry but you clearly dont go out in melbourne very much. cuz this was a very special event.
me and my friends sat on our couch behind the curtain for 15 mins just watching them before we got the courage to go to couches closer to the dancefloor. eventually my three mates got up and started dancing, but i went back to my couch and ate a pizza.

THEN
all of a sudden, the music suddenly went from weird obscure crap music to TOTALLY BANGING SHIT and everyone was dancing and i looked up and the cool girls where Djing!!!!!
holy shit!!! they were so cool and they kept yelling cool shit into the mic between songs, so amazing.
so
this is them, the trife parlour crew. i texted my friend straight away who put on the night and was like "who are the girl djs" and he texted me back there names and i kind of internet stalked them and stumbled across there blog, and its really really amazing, they are a crew of really strong women who are ALL artists in there own right and total individuals.

i have been following the blog and its really good and really funny!!! lots of pro women, supportive stuff. and there is a really good line somewhere in there, along the lines of "yeah, i fucked usher, but only cuz his 6 pack was soooo fine" hahahaha! amazing.

and there has been all these DUMB CUNTS giving them shit for being supportive + biased towards projects and art made by people of colour, and the girls have written really amazing smart and funny stuff shutting all the dumb racist cunts down.

I did this quick drawing of Michael Jackson with his two kids and bouncer after seeing them at the Beverly Hills Affaire in the Gardens. I had an art booth there and he and the kids walked by my booth. It was a a very strange moment..as it was almost a calm in the sea as he walked by. People where falling all over themselves to get a good look or photo of him and his kids. MJ had on a black veil and a black umbrella and the kids had opera masks that there where holding over there faces...and they had this security guard that looked like an Israeli Commando. I made this drawing when I got home. Auction starts at $1 dollar and there's no reserve! Recently Nova mc from Indonesia returned from her tour of Japan with Filistine, i just saw a vid of a performance in Koenji, its fucken cool.. but i also found a video of them performing at HEAVY SICK, which is this fucking amazing, cool underground club in Nakano. They have all the breakcore/noisy/interesting bands play there all the time, when i lived in nakano i would go there heaps, its got an amazing scene and support, if you ever go to japan i reccomend it.....the vid from Heavy Sick is only 40 seconds + its at the BOTTOM of this post. the vid right here just under these words is from koenji, check it out and hear Nova's incredible vocals....

Nova was in australia earlier this year, we put on a film night that she curated, cuz she also works for Engage Media.

if you dont know, BOON runs a label called Toilet World. it is made up of one off pieces for girlz/boyz/aliens/goblins etc. Each garment is hand painted with a absolutely NUTS design. A fun thing i have found i like doing with the clothes is grabbing something and saying "BOON, what is this" and they will say, "oh that an octopus stabbing a deformed moose mule in the butt, except his butt is his face."
and im like...
"ooooh.....um. cool!!!!!!"
yeah so Boons label is fkn wicked. practically sold out on the night, and the art was amazing!!!!

What do you do if you're a cool girl or shy boy and you wanna make music or art or whatever!??! MAKE MUSIC AND ART IN YR BEDROOM AND THEN TAKE IT TO THE WORLD!!!! It doesn't matter if you live in New York City, or the smallest, most boring town in the middle of nowhere, you can make music in your bedroom you can put your art online, and organize shows and meet people who make art and do other weird things!!! I've got some hottt tips, but first an intro:

When i moved to Melbourne, I was totally devo-ed when i realised that there wasn't a cool girl art noise scene here!!! :( cos I moved from Brisbane where Toxic Lipstick and Anal Cookie and other groups like that did heaps of work to make space for weirdo girls and weirdo boys who don't like guitar music! So my first couple of months in Melbourne were spent sooking about not having a space to call my own, but then my friends and I decided to BUILD A SCENE FROM SCRATCH, to create a space (in our bedrooms//minds and even ON STAGE) for girl noise artists and musicians to show each other (and the world) the amazing things that we can do! And so Gooey On The Inside was born!

Now, after organising parties for over a year, I've made friends with with teenagers who sample video games in their hot tracks, ex-drug addicts who rap about the shit in their life instead of taking pills, awesome performance-art drag-queens who do tarot readings and everyone's make-up, and lots of sparkle-whaaaa babes who have come out of their shells cos they know that there is space to make the art they want!

So… if you make music and you are a girl (or if you are a shy boy, or queer, or if yr not rich or WHATEVA) it can be harder to get your stuff out there than if you're a regular all-boy rock band!!! But if you push through the obstacles, you will find that there are people out there in similar positions to you, and who make cool stuff as well (or they will after they get inspired by what you're doing!). Their lives will be enriched by the knowledge that you and your art exist!! Right now it might not seem like there's space for what you're doing, but if you just to stick yr elbows out and wiggle a bit, you will make some!! This is DIY culture: DO IT YOURSELF, because no one else will!!

PUT ON SHOWS
This is probably the most important thing you can do to create a scene. A show is a physical space where people can perform all the (h)art that they have made! It a place to meet new people who have been lured in by your awesome flyer design skills and want to have a good time. Its a place to express yourself and show off!

have some idea of what you want to happen @ yr show…
You can have acts or DJs, or anything that you think will make cool people come to your show (like vegan hot dog stalls, weird installations by your art friends, bubble machines, WHATEVA YOU WANT!!!)

find a venue <3>
Anywhere could be a venue for your show!!! Gooey On The Inside have put on shows in warehouses, art galleries, squats, our friends' lounge-rooms, in carparks, in clubs, in an anarchist bookstore and recently even at big festivalz! Each venue will have its good and bad points. If your show is in an art gallery there may be sound restrictions but you'll probably have freedom to do some weird shit up there. If your show is in a squat, you'll need to be prepared for the fact that cops could turn up, and if you want to use a club or a pub you'll have to negotiate with the booker who might want a guarantee of how many people will come or else they'll want your money! But always be confident about what you want to do when you are talking to the people who run the venue you want to use. In general, if you're a girl, men will talk down to you and assume you know nothing. THIS IS FALSE!! You can do anything you want!! Easily!!!

organize a PA or sound equipment for the event
Some people get really intimidated when it comes to sound equipment (including me about 6 months ago), but its actually not that hard:
A PA is a Public Addess system, its the name for what normally includes a mixing desk, and at least two speakers, and normally it might come with some shit mics. Venues like pubs and clubs usually have a PA already, but you'll need to hire or borrow one if your party is at a gallery or a house or squat (or just use amps + shitty speakers).
Get to know mixing desks, leads, jacks, etc and you will won't have to deal with loser sound guys because you will hear the problem and be able to fix it yourself!! But here are some basic stuff to remember before you become a soundmaster:
Before you play, ALWAYS do a soundcheck. Good sound is half your show. Talk and sing into the mic the way you will when you perform. If there is a bit where you yell, do it so the sound person knows. If you don’t like your voice sounding really low or really high, tell them and they can take out the tones you don't like. But you need to say what you want, don’t trust that they just 'know what they’re doing'… they don’t… BE CONFIDENT for real!!!!!
If you make electronic music and it doesn’t sound right when its playing thru the PA, tell the sound tech straight away. They might argue with you and tell you that its your computer or your gear or your ears, but it isn`t. Normally they haven't plugged in both channels of your instrument/computer/mixer etc or have put them into the wrong hole! Oops!

Decide on a cool theme!! Some Gooey themes have been: clown, infinity, mad max sparkle apocolypse, birthday party, Ibiza beach party, goosebumps horror house, troll dolls, rave culture, the possilities are endless!
Make the flyer to match the theme using cracked versions of photoshop and hand draw colourful shit on top of it and then encourage people to dress up for the party. Make sure your flyer has ALL of the info that people will need, including the time, place, day AND date of your show, and also the acts who are playing the show! Give flyers to your friends and tell them if they start a band they can play too!!! Leave flyers at all the places you look for flyers (record stores, cafes, school/uni, clothes shops, youth centres). Put the flyer all over the internet and talk shit about your show (this is so fast for telling your friends to come party and you don’t have to print out onto old growth rain-forest).

cultivate community!
this sounds real posi, i know, but we're talking about nu-egg talent here!!! Once you're playing stadium shows you'll have heaps of time to think about whether your music is 'really good' or not. But right now, if you really want to create a new world for you and your allies, you need to believe in yourself as a radical performer! And remember, your friends are just like celebrities, they just haven't been exploited yet!

support the art
if your friend starts making raps or music or art tell them its awesome (because it IS) and then put on a party to celebrate it. (someone once asked me, 'but what about if your friend's art ISN'T good', but i've never come across this problem! 'good' is a totally subjective concept, and if Billy Ray Cyrus and his achey breaky heart could be a number one hit sensation of the early ninties, then there is no reason why yr friends can't play whatever they want at yr show, even if they just wanna bash on the bottom of icecream buckets and howl to the sky backed by a choir of stray dogs!!! also, if you don't like what someone does at your show, you don't have to ask them to play again, its good to try to have different performers at different parties too!!!)

never give up, no matter how many people tell you your music isn't 'good', let's push each other to become bigger, better, cooler, hotter, funner, freaks!
Remember to make a myspace if you are a cool girl artist + record songs in yr bedroom please, cuz the world needs it!! And then we can talk to each other and get inspired!

TOP 5 QUEER LOVE SONGS

well, since its that time of the year here's my top five list of queer love songs!!!:

1. When You Were Mine - Cyndi Lauper version (1985)
A cover of the Prince song, this version sung is by Lauper without changing the gender pronouns in the lyrics, which makes her version totally queer, because she is talking about her ex-lover now having a boy lover, which is not hetero.!:)

(in this version Cyndi enters stage via a big vaginal flap!!)

2. I Kissed A Girl - Jill Sobule (1995)
this one's a bit busted... (harmonica, anyone?!)

but its totally non-hetero, its the story of Jill talking to her friend about their boyfriends, 'He's such a hairy behemoth,
dumb as a box of hammers ' the friend says to Jill, and Jill responds that her lover 'Larry' has asked her to marry but she's waiting for a better offer. The two women laugh, drink, smoke, then make out.Jill acknowledges that while kissing another girl may not be a revolutionary action, it has made her happy:

this song also has quite an interesting hook, 'they can have their diamonds and we'll have our pearls', in which 'pearl' could definitely be interpreted as an allusion to the clit.

this song is heaps gayer than Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl, featuring the lines, ' I kissed a girl just to try it, I hope my boyfriend don't mind it', and 'it felt so wrong, it felt so right, don't mean i'm in love tonight' which is kinda radical love but still privledges tha het'.

3. Strip For Me - Gravy Train (2007)

Ok, Gravy Train are hella gay. Obviously. Strip For Me, featuring the line 'You may be the gayest fuckin' guy in town but I like dick and you have a weiner.' Gravy Train have this whole schtick, like, its all about really hott gay guys that straight girls are really resentful of, ever heard the song 'you made me gay'?) but this song is just too good to skip, a queer HIT!

this video is a fan art. i love it because i love drag kings and the fact that a lot of drag kings perform in really similar ways. also i wish that was my bedroom, this version ends with drag king saying, 'oh my god, that got my glasses foggy...'

4. They're Not Gonna Get Us - t.A.T.u (2002)
Everyone knows that Tatu were a totally manufactured teen lesbian duo, created in 1998 by a businessman who had realized that the most searched terms for porn were 'teen' and 'lesbian', and that he could make some money. On this premise, he brought Lena and Yulia together (then both 13 years old) and they recorded 200km in the wrong lane which spawned the hit singles All The Things She Said and the Smiths cover How Soon Is Now.
They're Not Gonna Get Us is in the distinctive t.A.T.u style of overdriven almost nu-metal techno and boasts such teen angsty lyrics as, ' My love for you, always forever, Just you and me, all else is nothing, Not going back, not going back there, They don't understand, They don't understand us '(fades to epic echo....)

this video clip features Lena and Yulia hangin tough on the back of a huge truck plummetting through the snow without a driver!! that's HOTTTTT! note the smashed glass effect when they are singing as the video was only filmed with the girls singing in Russian.

5. Gold Star - O.T.T. (2008)

This song is hot. Not only is it a love song, and a queer pride song, but its also a banging dance track. Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Oscar Nutt and the Trash are total party people who make homo electro and wear excellent costumes. Gold Star is the idea of being totalz gay, 'i'm a gold star, a puritan gay, i wouldn't go straight, even for one day' is the chorus and the loooove affection comes in a sing, songy, almost lullaby, ' Gold star,

"Between Birchville Cat Motel (NZ), KK NULL (Japan) and Maruosa (Japan) there is a multicoloured bouquet of noise musics, worth hearing indeed but less interesting to write about. (“Loud!”) RAVENATION though, is a performance worth detailing—worth, even getting thrown out of for disorderly behaviour and sneaking back in over the beergarden fence. Curated by Melbourne performance collective Gooey On the Inside, the show assembles a kind of mocking electro cabaret that veers between deft satire and simple mockery but mostly hangs out in the vicinity of general mayhem.

Half a generation since the festival was founded, Electrofringe’s early days are already fodder for (re)appropriation by the young turks as much as the pop culture canon; everything from breakcore to cabaret is compressed in RAVENATION into a parodical three hour hyper-rave with smoke machine, lasers and fake MDMA included, not to mention an animatronic latex penis mask, all broadcast in animated GIF art on Myspace. These folks are not just staking out a claim for their area of practice on the fringes of the mainstream, but wresting it back from the ageing cohort who now run the flagship, and producing an impressively slick show while they’re at it.

Programming touring international artists is fantastic for Electrofringe’s profile; but it’s the ability to invite the cream of troublemakers into the halls of marginally-more-power that keep it alive and relevant. I can’t wait until Gooey on the Inside get their comeuppance in turn in a few years’ time."
