BYEBYE GOOEY ON THE INSIDE

RIP GOOEY ON THE INSIDE 2007- 2010.
Gooey On the Inside was an amazing scene, and an incredible moment in time of art and music but it is time to for us close the curtains on this.

We have both moved onto new exciting projects.
Keep in touch with us if you want.... and THANKYOU!!!!
we are keeping this blog up for historical purposes. please browse it thoroughly to find all the cool wack shit we did XXXXXXXXXXXX

Q: What is Gooey on The Inside?
A: Gooey on the Inside was an underground art, music and event organisation curated by Kati Cubby and Holly Fluxx that successfully hosted over 40 separate events (from 2007-2010).

Our events included art exhibitions, live music performances, dance parties, artist markets, workshops, skill shares, contemporary dance performances, writings, theatre performances, fundraisers, live video streams, panel discussions and fashion shows, as well as a combination of many of these simultaneously.

Highlights of Gooey On the Inside include:
- A live music and art event in Berlin, Germany (The Slumber Party)
- A live music and art event in Santiago, Chile (La Cunt Rave)
- A well received music showcase compilation cd (Hit Machine XXIVIVX), featuring Gooey on the Inside artists from Indonesia, Japan, Chile, USA, UK, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and across Australia.
- An invitation to speak at This Is Not Art Festival 2008 on "How to start a scene from scratch"
- Producing our own specialist radio programs for 3CR and SYN fm
- Over 40 successful dynamic and diverse events spanning the course of three years
- Featured in an interview and full page spread in UK magazine "Super Super" as well as local Australian zines

Focusing on young people who identified as women, trans, queer, and people of colour, we strived to create space, agency, audience, support and a thriving, dynamic environment and build a community for our artists.

We have now moved on to other projects, but can be contacted via email:
katicubby@gmail.com and shotflux@gmail.com

thanks so much
love kati and holly!

HOW TO START A SCENE FROM SCRATCH, taken from holly and kati's GOOEY project presentation, ELECTROFRINGE 08

What do you do if you're a cool girl or shy boy and you wanna make music or art or whatever!??! MAKE MUSIC AND ART IN YR BEDROOM AND THEN TAKE IT TO THE WORLD!!!! It doesn't matter if you live in New York City, or the smallest, most boring town in the middle of nowhere, you can make music in your bedroom you can put your art online, and organize shows and meet people who make art and do other weird things!!! I've got some hottt tips, but first an intro:

When i moved to Melbourne, I was totally devo-ed when i realised that there wasn't a cool girl art noise scene here!!! :( cos I moved from Brisbane where Toxic Lipstick and Anal Cookie and other groups like that did heaps of work to make space for weirdo girls and weirdo boys who don't like guitar music! So my first couple of months in Melbourne were spent sooking about not having a space to call my own, but then my friends and I decided to BUILD A SCENE FROM SCRATCH, to create a space (in our bedrooms//minds and even ON STAGE) for girl noise artists and musicians to show each other (and the world) the amazing things that we can do! And so Gooey On The Inside was born!

Now, after organising parties for over a year, I've made friends with with teenagers who sample video games in their hot tracks, ex-drug addicts who rap about the shit in their life instead of taking pills, awesome performance-art drag-queens who do tarot readings and everyone's make-up, and lots of sparkle-whaaaa babes who have come out of their shells cos they know that there is space to make the art they want!

So… if you make music and you are a girl (or if you are a shy boy, or queer, or if yr not rich or WHATEVA) it can be harder to get your stuff out there than if you're a regular all-boy rock band!!! But if you push through the obstacles, you will find that there are people out there in similar positions to you, and who make cool stuff as well (or they will after they get inspired by what you're doing!). Their lives will be enriched by the knowledge that you and your art exist!! Right now it might not seem like there's space for what you're doing, but if you just to stick yr elbows out and wiggle a bit, you will make some!! This is DIY culture: DO IT YOURSELF, because no one else will!!

PUT ON SHOWS
This is probably the most important thing you can do to create a scene. A show is a physical space where people can perform all the (h)art that they have made! It a place to meet new people who have been lured in by your awesome flyer design skills and want to have a good time. Its a place to express yourself and show off!

have some idea of what you want to happen @ yr show…
You can have acts or DJs, or anything that you think will make cool people come to your show (like vegan hot dog stalls, weird installations by your art friends, bubble machines, WHATEVA YOU WANT!!!)

find a venue <3>
Anywhere could be a venue for your show!!! Gooey On The Inside have put on shows in warehouses, art galleries, squats, our friends' lounge-rooms, in carparks, in clubs, in an anarchist bookstore and recently even at big festivalz! Each venue will have its good and bad points. If your show is in an art gallery there may be sound restrictions but you'll probably have freedom to do some weird shit up there. If your show is in a squat, you'll need to be prepared for the fact that cops could turn up, and if you want to use a club or a pub you'll have to negotiate with the booker who might want a guarantee of how many people will come or else they'll want your money! But always be confident about what you want to do when you are talking to the people who run the venue you want to use. In general, if you're a girl, men will talk down to you and assume you know nothing. THIS IS FALSE!! You can do anything you want!! Easily!!!

organize a PA or sound equipment for the event
Some people get really intimidated when it comes to sound equipment (including me about 6 months ago), but its actually not that hard:
A PA is a Public Addess system, its the name for what normally includes a mixing desk, and at least two speakers, and normally it might come with some shit mics. Venues like pubs and clubs usually have a PA already, but you'll need to hire or borrow one if your party is at a gallery or a house or squat (or just use amps + shitty speakers).
Get to know mixing desks, leads, jacks, etc and you will won't have to deal with loser sound guys because you will hear the problem and be able to fix it yourself!! But here are some basic stuff to remember before you become a soundmaster:
Before you play, ALWAYS do a soundcheck. Good sound is half your show. Talk and sing into the mic the way you will when you perform. If there is a bit where you yell, do it so the sound person knows. If you don’t like your voice sounding really low or really high, tell them and they can take out the tones you don't like. But you need to say what you want, don’t trust that they just 'know what they’re doing'… they don’t… BE CONFIDENT for real!!!!!
If you make electronic music and it doesn’t sound right when its playing thru the PA, tell the sound tech straight away. They might argue with you and tell you that its your computer or your gear or your ears, but it isn`t. Normally they haven't plugged in both channels of your instrument/computer/mixer etc or have put them into the wrong hole! Oops!

promote ya gig
Decide on a cool theme!! Some Gooey themes have been: clown, infinity, mad max sparkle apocolypse, birthday party, Ibiza beach party, goosebumps horror house, troll dolls, rave culture, the possilities are endless!
Make the flyer to match the theme using cracked versions of photoshop and hand draw colourful shit on top of it and then encourage people to dress up for the party. Make sure your flyer has ALL of the info that people will need, including the time, place, day AND date of your show, and also the acts who are playing the show! Give flyers to your friends and tell them if they start a band they can play too!!! Leave flyers at all the places you look for flyers (record stores, cafes, school/uni, clothes shops, youth centres). Put the flyer all over the internet and talk shit about your show (this is so fast for telling your friends to come party and you don’t have to print out onto old growth rain-forest).

cultivate community!
this sounds real posi, i know, but we're talking about nu-egg talent here!!! Once you're playing stadium shows you'll have heaps of time to think about whether your music is 'really good' or not. But right now, if you really want to create a new world for you and your allies, you need to believe in yourself as a radical performer! And remember, your friends are just like celebrities, they just haven't been exploited yet!

support the art
if your friend starts making raps or music or art tell them its awesome (because it IS) and then put on a party to celebrate it. (someone once asked me, 'but what about if your friend's art ISN'T good', but i've never come across this problem! 'good' is a totally subjective concept, and if Billy Ray Cyrus and his achey breaky heart could be a number one hit sensation of the early ninties, then there is no reason why yr friends can't play whatever they want at yr show, even if they just wanna bash on the bottom of icecream buckets and howl to the sky backed by a choir of stray dogs!!! also, if you don't like what someone does at your show, you don't have to ask them to play again, its good to try to have different performers at different parties too!!!)

co-inspire with your friends
never give up, no matter how many people tell you your music isn't 'good', let's push each other to become bigger, better, cooler, hotter, funner, freaks!
Remember to make a myspace if you are a cool girl artist + record songs in yr bedroom please, cuz the world needs it!! And then we can talk to each other and get inspired!

TOP 5 QUEER LOVE SONGS

well, since its that time of the year here's my top five list of queer love songs!!!:

1. When You Were Mine - Cyndi Lauper version (1985)
A cover of the Prince song, this version sung is by Lauper without changing the gender pronouns in the lyrics, which makes her version totally queer, because she is talking about her ex-lover now having a boy lover, which is not hetero.!:)

(in this version Cyndi enters stage via a big vaginal flap!!)

2. I Kissed A Girl - Jill Sobule (1995)
this one's a bit busted... (harmonica, anyone?!)

but its totally non-hetero, its the story of Jill talking to her friend about their boyfriends, 'He's such a hairy behemoth,
dumb as a box of hammers ' the friend says to Jill, and Jill responds that her lover 'Larry' has asked her to marry but she's waiting for a better offer. The two women laugh, drink, smoke, then make out.Jill acknowledges that while kissing another girl may not be a revolutionary action, it has made her happy:

I kissed a girl
Her lips were sweet.
She was just like kissing me
Kissed a girl won't change the world
But I'm so glad,
I kissed a girl!

this song also has quite an interesting hook, 'they can have their diamonds and we'll have our pearls', in which 'pearl' could definitely be interpreted as an allusion to the clit.

this song is heaps gayer than Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl, featuring the lines, '
I kissed a girl just to try it, I hope my boyfriend don't mind it', and 'it felt so wrong, it felt so right, don't mean i'm in love tonight' which is kinda radical love but still privledges tha het'.

3. Strip For Me - Gravy Train (2007)

Ok, Gravy Train are hella gay. Obviously. Strip For Me, featuring the line 'You may be the gayest fuckin' guy in town but I like dick and you have a weiner.' Gravy Train have this whole schtick, like, its all about really hott gay guys that straight girls are really resentful of, ever heard the song 'you made me gay'?) but this song is just too good to skip, a queer HIT!

this video is a fan art. i love it because i love drag kings and the fact that a lot of drag kings perform in really similar ways. also i wish that was my bedroom, this version ends with drag king saying, 'oh my god, that got my glasses foggy...'

4. They're Not Gonna Get Us - t.A.T.u (2002)
Everyone knows that Tatu were a totally manufactured teen lesbian duo, created in 1998 by a businessman who had realized that the most searched terms for porn were 'teen' and 'lesbian', and that he could make some money. On this premise, he brought Lena and Yulia together (then both 13 years old) and they recorded 200km in the wrong lane which spawned the hit singles All The Things She Said and the Smiths cover How Soon Is Now.
They're Not Gonna Get Us is in the distinctive t.A.T.u style of overdriven almost nu-metal techno and boasts such teen angsty lyrics as, ' My love for you, always forever, Just you and me, all else is nothing, Not going back, not going back there, They don't understand, They don't understand us '(fades to epic echo....)

this video clip features Lena and Yulia hangin tough on the back of a huge truck plummetting through the snow without a driver!! that's HOTTTTT! note the smashed glass effect when they are singing as the video was only filmed with the girls singing in Russian.

5. Gold Star - O.T.T. (2008)

This song is hot. Not only is it a love song, and a queer pride song, but its also a banging dance track. Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Oscar Nutt and the Trash are total party people who make homo electro and wear excellent costumes. Gold Star is the idea of being totalz gay, 'i'm a gold star, a puritan gay, i wouldn't go straight, even for one day' is the chorus and the loooove affection comes in a sing, songy, almost lullaby, '
Gold star,
Shining bright,
will you be my baby tonight?
Gold star,
I've got so much pride,
too much loving that I just can't hide.'
if you weren't a gold star before listening to this track, you'll probably be wishing you were by the end *sigh*

this is O.T.T.'s myspace, Gold Star is the first track on their player.!

so what's your favourite queer love song? PEACE OUT!

ELECTROFRINGE INVITES CREAM OV TROUBLE MAKERS = ~~~~~~~GOOEY ON THA INSIDE~~~~~~~~

"Between Birchville Cat Motel (NZ), KK NULL (Japan) and Maruosa (Japan) there is a multicoloured bouquet of noise musics, worth hearing indeed but less interesting to write about. (“Loud!”) RAVENATION though, is a performance worth detailing—worth, even getting thrown out of for disorderly behaviour and sneaking back in over the beergarden fence. Curated by Melbourne performance collective Gooey On the Inside, the show assembles a kind of mocking electro cabaret that veers between deft satire and simple mockery but mostly hangs out in the vicinity of general mayhem.

Half a generation since the festival was founded, Electrofringe’s early days are already fodder for (re)appropriation by the young turks as much as the pop culture canon; everything from breakcore to cabaret is compressed in RAVENATION into a parodical three hour hyper-rave with smoke machine, lasers and fake MDMA included, not to mention an animatronic latex penis mask, all broadcast in animated GIF art on Myspace. These folks are not just staking out a claim for their area of practice on the fringes of the mainstream, but wresting it back from the ageing cohort who now run the flagship, and producing an impressively slick show while they’re at it.

Programming touring international artists is fantastic for Electrofringe’s profile; but it’s the ability to invite the cream of troublemakers into the halls of marginally-more-power that keep it alive and relevant. I can’t wait until Gooey on the Inside get their comeuppance in turn in a few years’ time."

via Regrette and Kt Spit...

Bjork had some moderate differnces with the press this past weekend, when she reacted to an item in the The Reykjavík Grapevine crediting Valgeir Sigurðsson with writing the arrangements on her 2001 album Vespertine, although this was not the case at all. She took the liberty of correcting the respective article, offering the true full credits of the album and then went on and accuessed the journalists of sexism, not necessarily the Grapevine, but rather press in general. She accuses writers of discrediting female electronic musicians by assuming that the writing and production of much of this music is done by men. Here's what she said, as posted on bjork.com:

"i saw in the last issue of iceland's newspaper in english: "grapevine", that valgeir sigurðsson was credited for having written all the instrumentals for my album vespertine. could i please offer a correction:

i have noticed last 7 years that mr. sigurðsson has often been credited for either writing or producing that album. i´d like to say that he didn´t write it or produce. he was a computer programmer for a third of it and a recording engineer for a third. The other two thirds were done by other engineers and programmers.

here is the creditlist to show you the correct crediting of vespertine. i don´t understand where that misunderstanding has come from

could be one of four options:

1 :the pop critics of this world have not totally yet worked out the difference between engineering, programming, writing and producing electronic music. visually this appears very similar. a man/woman sitting in front of a computer. not as different as for example a drummer, a brass arranger and an engineer. but these are 3 completely different jobs which journalists must start to see the difference

2: it could be that this is some degree of sexism. m.i.a. had to deal with this with the respected website pitchfork.com where they assumed that diplo had produced all of her kala album without reading any credit list or nothing , it just had to be, it couldn´t have been m.i.a. herself! it feel like still today after all these years people cannot imagine that woman can write, arrange or produce electronic music. i have had this experience many many times that the work i do on the computer gets credited to whatever male was in 10 meter radius during the job. people seem to accept that women can sing and play whatever instrument they are seen playing but they cannot program, arrange, produce, edit or write electronic music.

3: i´ll admit that one thing could confuse things: people have to use their ears and actually read the creditlist to get this information. all the music i have made: like for example string arrangements, synthbasslines or programming of electronic patterns, i never play myself live because i want to give 100% of myself into the singing i either ask the computers to play it or i get other musicians to play it. this could confuse things.

4: one thing that could have kept this misunderstanding alive is that neither me nor valgeir sigurðsson have bothered to correct it

but i am doing it now

i hope this correction will be a positive input into more discussion about this
c
warmth
björk.

p.s. just read that pitchfork.com credited nico muhly for the choir arrangement of "hidden place" from vespertine. also that he has done string arrangements for me. this is not true. journalists: please read the creditlist before you write your articles."

who's afraid of kathy acker!?

i went and saw

WHO'S AFRAID OF KATHY ACKER?

last night...

but:::

A couple of weeks ago, one of my lecturers asked me to describe Kathy Acker to the class... I said that she was a feminist writer who explored dream/women's (or at least her own) experiences of sex and childhood sex/incest.

My teacher's face contorted, 'mmmm, I don't think that's what she did...'

I freaked out, embarrassed at my now seemingly 'wrong'/'sexualized' reading of Acker. I went home, couldn't sleep and stayed up all night reading My Mother:Demonology:A Novel. By sunrise, I was satisfied that my description of Kathy Acker was, at least, not inaccurate.

Who's Afraid Of Kathy Acker is a documentary written and directed by Barbara Caspar, released in 2008, which contains heaps of footage and photos of Acker, and interviews with her contemporaries and lots of interviews with students and men who had slept with her saying things like, 'she was like an androgynous little girly sex kitten'.

To start with, Kathy Acker was/is an North American writer... performer, pornographer who died in 1997 of breast cancer. This documentary... seeks to construct Acker as a feminist writer warrior who is simultaneously an outsider punk type, and a brilliant intellectual.

The documentary has its weaknesses, pretty much all interviews take place in front of book shelves, or, if its a musician being interviewed, in front of record collections. There is even some boring footage of Acker being interviewed by some clueless dude on Radio National in Australia... which is just kinda boring and pointless.

And there was footage of her at early readings, and her experimental porn movies, so if you're worried about nudity, prepare to see some vaginal close-ups.

A friend who I watched the documentary with asked, why make such a linear, ordered documentary about a woman who said that very quickly she was bored of standard biography form?

I must say that I loved seeing footage of Kathy Acker, I loved all the seemingly randomly inserted excerpts from her work that made it into the movie, I loved the construction of big bad New York City as a main character in the movie, but I didn't like the sexual banter from the men... many of whom didn't actually seem to know Acker significantly apart from instances of sex! Go and see it if you can. Its not brilliant, but its got rare footage, and you will probably be inspired to write or make some porn or something by the time the movie is finished.

YAH AYHA YAH!!!

also kathy acker interviewed the spice girls just before she died, this is tha link!!1x

OK::::
can you still remember australia?

Nothing is closer to my thoughts: right now I really cant wait to get back, although I AM in the best place in the UK, staying with the Backlash crew, Armegge:DON, post Geordie Gabba Mafia (DJ Smurf, et al)... Newcastle!! The further north you get from London the more aussie people get - less stuck up, busy, cheaper, etc.

if so, what was the best product available from alfalfa house when you worked there??

Mmmmmmmm, so much good foods! I can never get sick of it, also, it almost always changing. I am looking forward to going back to work there - good people, terrific conditions, and i love co-operation! It's all the people who hate to work for bosses. But products, hmmmm, I guess Ilike avocados, with salt and pepper, or a fucking apple which sounds like your biting into a 4 month foetus skull, but less juicy. mangosteins, errrr, and the day we were serving the strawberry guavas from the backyard of the co-op!

what are yr music euro tips for oz mutherfuckers??

DONT DRINK OUT OF ANY RIVERS IN EUROPE! Me and Robert Inhuman (from Realicide) were VIOLENTLY ILL with liquids out of control leaving our bodies. I half filled a waste basket with vomit, but robert produced something which was almost a greeny black, like seaweed he said.

Oh, wait. You said MUSIC. Right well, for music you have Electromeca, wot a genius! Hmmm, I really cannot recommend Captain Ahab enough - I love those guys, and their shows were SO amazing - it sounds like they may be coming back to Australia for Electrofringe. I like Felix Kubin, Mr. Oizo, DJ Got Headphones, and of course, Kikifruit!!

tell me about kiki fruit!!!is it girl or boy (or something else)
what do they look like and play and shit??
(you know how i wanted to know about that shit)

Kind of a weird skinny dude, super nice! I got three books of his art, which was our stroke material for the tour. We all found his material to be boner producing. His music is really really great, he dressses up in like a disco klu klux klan outfit, like pointy hat with shiny stuff all over it, and a kind of tunic, with his skinny legs sticking out in gold tights. He MCs with a super heavy vocoder effect
which basicly makes it sound like he is a honking canard from deep space. Looking forward to his record release... Stroboscop!!! Which we thought at first was Like (st)ROBO_COP, which makes me laugh a lot!!

do you have new euro hobbies????if so, please explain...................................

I bought a portable water filter which i use almost every day to purify my water - I have decoded that water is about the most importastnt thing ever for my body
so I want to be conastantly supplied with the best quaility I can get. AND I am NOT going to PAY for water....

what is the best thing you have bOUGHT or been given on this tour??

The best thing I think I got on this tour was from the realicide guys - John who runs a distro called OUT FALL CHANNEL, based in cincinati I think. It was a small A5 zine writtten by this guy calls himself Jim Swill, the book is called "The Great Equaliser". It's A series of poems written in a remote farm, during a churning session of self discovery. SUPER personal drivel. A lot about death and masturbating. Fascinating.

have you experienced any weird or funny weather that you would want to talk about??

WTF?? No, sorry.

what is the best food you've had?where was it from??

Marseille we got fed the ankle of a pig
was really fatty and nice, then potatoes were lush- it was all farmer direct from the local market.
The show was shit tho...

have you made crazy new music??????? what is yr DIRECTION right now?????

No, House, still, babe, 100%house, babe. ____ tiss ka tiss, ____ tiss ka tiss, ____ tiss ka tiss, ____ tiss ka tiss

do you have anything else that you want to say!!!!?????
please do.

Read ENDGAME 1 + 2 by Derrick Jensen - anti-civilisation

Melbourne International Animation Festival

THUMBS DOWN!!!!!
could this suck anymore!??!!
last night kati and I went to watch the BEST OF
and so many of the animations were... like... a weird bald man in a prison like setting... being oppressed by a bigger man, and with some insect friend.
totally shit and boring.

there were a couple that were ... ok, like... Energie! by Thorsten Fleisch (Germany) and the one that was an animated movie accompanying an interview that a teenager conducted with John Lennon in a hotel room in... 1968? in which that lennon guy says, 'if you run around wild you get smacked...thats the way of the universe.'(I Met The Walrus)

sweet.
best of sucked.
the end.
